About Us

Heart of the Island Chorus offers musical education as part of its program. Because we sing in the A Cappella style (without musical accompaniment) our members have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of excellence through educational workshops offered by Sweet Adelines, traveling to and competing in Regional contests and attending extra coaching sessions that are offered throughout the year. But it’s not all practice, practice, practice. Bringing joy, laughter and togetherness to our rehearsals is as equally important to us. Treasured friendships, respect for one another and at times, serious silliness is what Heart of the Island Chorus is all about.

What is 4-part harmony, Barbershop style?

Sung in 4 voice parts (Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass), the ultimate challenge of singing 4-part harmony is creating a 5th note (the “overtone”) that has been known to bring tears to the most macho of men and caused women to swear off chocolate. Well, maybe not to that degree, but it is incredibly thrilling when it happens. Of course, barbershop music wouldn’t be the same without choreography, stage production, costumes and much, much more.
